A 71-meter (233 ft) stone statue

A 71-meter (233 ft) stone statue of the Leshan Giant Buddha sits atop a cliff at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River in southern Sichuan Province, China, near Leshan. Construction began in 722 AD under the direction of monk Hai Tong. The statue was carved from Cretaceous red bed sandstones.
