Locarno, CH

With 19 dating to the Roman period

Locarno is a town on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore in the canton of Ticino, situated at the southern foot of the Swiss Alps. In 1934, a necropolis containing 14 urn graves from the Early Bronze Age was discovered. In 1995 and 1997, archaeologists uncovered 57 graves in Via Valle Maggia, with 19 dating to the Roman period, indicating that both cremation and body burials coexisted in the 3rd century AD. The original capitanei of Locarno were likely descendants of the Lombard noble family of Da Besozzo from the county of Seprio.
