People have been here at least 11,000 years. For more than a thousand of them the islands have been the centre of great cod fisheries, busiest in winter when the cod migrate. Vågan, in the early Viking Age, is the first known town formation in northern Norway. The mountains are a horst ridge, lifted along faults running northeast to southwest.
