Caroline, a British whaling barque, anchored at Blinky Beach in June 1834, marking the island's permanent settlement. The island, named after Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe, lies 600 km east of Port Macquarie and is about 10 km long. Mount Gower, reaching 875 meters, dominates the southern forested hills. The Lord Howe Island Group, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompasses 28 islands, with Ball's Pyramid, a volcanic rock, situated 23 km southeast of the main island.
