Luang Prabang, LA
In the 8th century CE
Luang Prabang is the capital of Luang Prabang Province in north-central Laos. In the 8th century CE, Sri Gotapura controlled trade throughout the middle Mekong region and introduced Theravada Buddhism from Sri Lankan missionaries. The name Luang Prabang, meaning 'Royal Buddha Image,' derives from the Phra Bang statue, which symbolizes Lao sovereignty and was given to the first Lang Xang monarch Fa Ngum to provide Buddhist legitimacy to his rule.
