Gautama Buddha delivered a sermon to his disciples
Lumbini is a sacred Buddhist pilgrimage site located in the Rupandehi District of Lumbini Province, Nepal. Human activity at Lumbini dates back to around 1,000 BCE, as evidenced by radiocarbon dating of charcoal and optically stimulated luminescence dating of soil. The Ashokan shrine at Lumbini mirrors the layout of an earlier timber structure, indicating a long-standing tradition of worship and an ancient tree shrine predating the Mauryan era. Before his parinirvana at eighty, Gautama Buddha delivered a sermon to his disciples, emphasizing Lumbini as one of four significant pilgrimage sites on earth for a believing householder's son or daughter.
