Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located in the Eastern Cordillera of southern Peru on a mountain ridge at 2,430 meters. Earlier chronological models have placed the beginning of construction around 1450. This date marks ten years after the Inca ruler's takeover. Construction appears to date from two Sapa Incas.
