Macquarie Island is a subantarctic island located in the south-western Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway between Tasmania and Antarctica. In 1978, it was designated a Tasmanian State Reserve. The island was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. On December 23, 2004, an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 8.1 struck the island but resulted in no significant damage.
