Alberto Pitentino redirected the River Mincio

In the 12th century, Alberto Pitentino redirected the River Mincio, forming the four lakes that bolster the city's natural defenses. The Rotonda di San Lorenzo was commissioned in 1082 by Countess Matilda of Canossa. In 1328, the Bonacolsi family's last ruler, Rinaldo, was ousted by Luigi Gonzaga and his family, who orchestrated a public revolt and executed a coup d'état. The three lakes encircling Mantua were established in the 12th century as part of the city's defensive infrastructure.
