Estádio do Maracanã, officially Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho, is an association football stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The first cornerstone was laid at the site on 2 August 1948. After securing the right to host the 1950 FIFA World Cup, the Brazilian government initiated the construction of the new stadium.
