Mauna Kea is a dormant shield

Mauna Kea is a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi. It began as a preshield volcano driven by the Hawaiʻi hotspot around one million years ago. Mauna Kea is one of five volcanoes that form the island of Hawaiʻi, the largest and youngest island of the Hawaiian–Emperor seamount chain. The shield-stage lavas that built its enormous main mass are tholeiitic basalts, created through the mixing of primary magma and subducted oceanic crust.
