Arrived from Mount Athos with followers in 1344
Athanasios Koinovitis, later known as Athanasios the Meteorite, arrived from Mount Athos with followers in 1344. The Monastery of Great Meteoron was established between 1356 and 1372. Access to the monasteries was originally challenging, requiring long ladders secured together or large nets to transport goods and people. In 1356, Simeon Uroš proclaimed himself Emperor of Serbs and Greeks, and his son John Uroš succeeded him in 1370, retiring as a monk at the Meteoron monastery, where he died in the early 1420s.
