Mount Nemrut, TR

Arranged with stars and the planets Jupiter

Mount Nemrut features a tomb-sanctuary built by King Antiochus I of Commagene on the mountain top, flanked by huge statues. The western terrace contains a large slab with a lion, arranged with stars and the planets Jupiter, Mercury, and Mars, representing a sky chart from 7 July 62 BCE. The statues were originally seated, with each god's name inscribed on them, but their heads were later removed and are now scattered across the site. Antiochus I merged and adjusted the political and religious traditions of Cappadocia, Pontus, and Armenia to create this monument.
