Mount St. Helens, US
1st Baron St Helens
Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano in Skamania County, Washington, United States. It began growing 37,600 years ago during the Pleistocene Ape Canyon stage; the volcano is named after British diplomat Alleyne FitzHerbert, 1st Baron St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver. Beneath the mountain, magma accumulates in two chambers: one 3–7 miles below the surface and another 7–25 miles deep. Despite the eruption's devastation, aquatic ecosystems in the area thrived, with lakes returning to normal within six years.
