Mount Tai is the highest point in Shandong province, China, located north of Tai'an. Traces of human presence at Mount Tai date back to the Paleolithic period, with evidence of settlement from the Neolithic period onwards. The emperors of past dynasties visited Mount Tai to worship the heavens and address the earth. Known as the eastern mountain of the Sacred Mountains of China, Mount Tai is associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal, often regarded as the foremost of the five sacred mountains.
