Juan de Villanueva designed the building
The building that now houses the Museo Nacional del Prado was designed in 1785 by architect Juan de Villanueva for Charles III to house the Natural History Cabinet. Ferdinand VII, encouraged by Queen María Isabel de Braganza, later transformed it into a Royal Museum of Paintings and Sculptures in 1819. By 2012, the Prado displayed about 1,300 works in its main buildings, while 3,100 pieces were on temporary loan elsewhere. The Prado was the 16th most-visited museum in the world in 2020.
