Mycenae, GR
On Linear B tablets
In 1700 the Venetian engineer Francesco Vandeyk surveyed for Francesco Grimani and matched the ruins to Pausanias's description of the Lion Gate. That was the first correct identification of Mycenae in modern literature. The fortification blocks were so massive that later ages took them for the work of the one-eyed Cyclopes, and the walling is still called Cyclopean. Burial in tholoi replaced the shaft graves, and the shaft graves were still kept up. The earliest Greek is here, on Linear B tablets.
