Nablus is a city in the West Bank, Palestine, serving as the capital of the Nablus Governorate; it was founded in 72 CE by Roman emperor Vespasian, who named it Flavia Neapolis. The city was built on a Roman grid plan and settled by veterans and foreign colonists from the victorious legions. The city was built due to its strategic geographic position and the abundance of water from nearby springs.
