Nalanda Mahavihara, IN
Designated as an Institute of National Importance
Nalanda Mahavihara was a historic Buddhist university in India. It was established by emperor Kumaragupta I around 427 CE. The mahavihara housed a renowned library that served as a key source for Sanskrit texts transmitted to East Asia by pilgrims such as Xuanzang and Yijing. In 2010, the Government of India passed a resolution to revive the ancient university, leading to the establishment of a contemporary Nālandā University at Rajgir, designated as an Institute of National Importance.
