Neusiedl Lake, HU

Formed 18,000–14,000 years ago

Lake Neusiedl, also known as Lake Fertő, straddles Austria and Hungary and is the largest endorheic lake in Central and Western Europe, second only to the Caspian Sea. Formed 18,000–14,000 years ago, the lake once extended into the marshlands of the Hanság, which were progressively drained for agriculture from the 16th century. Before 19th-century regulation, the lake was closely linked to the Danube and Rába river systems. Notably, the lake completely disappeared in 1740–1742, 1811–1813, and again in 1866, with the latter event documented in a local diary.
