Nippur, IQ
Following the decline of the Neo-Assyrian Empire
Nippur was an ancient Sumerian city. Ur-Nammu constructed a massive brick terrace, approximately 12 meters high and covering 32,000 square meters, alongside a three-stage ziggurat made of dry bricks faced with kiln-fired bricks and bitumen. Nippur served as the sacred seat of Enlil, the Sumerian god known as the "Lord Wind" and ruler of the cosmos, who was subject only to An. Following the decline of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, the ancient temple of Ekur fell into decay and was eventually transformed into a fortress during the Seleucid period.
