Olten, CH

Estimated at around 500 people by 1600

The Roman fortress at Olten, abandoned in the 4th century, lay on the south-eastern corner of an earlier settlement that had hosted a bridge across the Aare. Throughout the medieval period, Olten's population remained modest, estimated at around 500 people by 1600. The town lost its city rights in 1653, a consequence of its support for the Swiss Peasant War, which fostered a tradition of resistance against authority.
