Orange River, NA

Named by a garrison commander

Colonel Robert Gordon, who commanded the United East India Company garrison at the Cape, gave the river its name in 1779. It runs 2,432 km, the longest in South Africa, fed by tributaries out of the highlands of Lesotho. It now provides water for irrigation and hydroelectric power. In South African folklore it also holds the Grootslang, a giant serpent.
