The hill that was Volsinii
The city sits on the flat summit of a butte of volcanic tuff, walled in the same stone. Volsinii, one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan Confederation, is identified with this hill. Allied with the Salpinates, the Volsinians raided Roman territory in 391 BC and lost; 8,000 were taken prisoner, and a 20-year truce cost them the plunder and a year's pay for the Roman army. They were subdued in 280 BC, the ancient city destroyed and a new one raised elsewhere. The name Urbs vetus was adopted against the new Volsinii.
