Palais Garnier, FR

Iron, hidden inside the masonry

Napoleon III wanted it, and it was built for the Paris Opera between 1861 and 1875 — 1,979 seats at the Place de l'Opéra. What holds it up is not what you see: masonry walls, with iron floors, vaults and roofs concealed inside them. The company now uses the Palais Garnier mainly for ballet.
