Palmyra is an ancient city in central Syria
Palmyra is an ancient city in central Syria. Archaeological finds date back to the Neolithic period, and documents first mention the city in the early second millennium BCE. Palmyra began as a small Neolithic settlement near the Efqa spring on the southern bank of Wadi al-Qubur. During the Syrian civil war in 2015, the Islamic State captured Palmyra and destroyed large parts of the ancient city. The Syrian Army recaptured Palmyra on 2 March 2017.
