Panama Canal, PA
Construction began in 1881 and stopped in 1889
The Panama Canal features locks at each end that lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial fresh water lake 26 meters (85 ft) above sea level. Gatun Lake was created by damming the Chagres River and Lake Alajuela. Construction began in 1881 and stopped in 1889. The Panamanian government took control in 1999, and the canal is now managed and operated by the Panamanian government-owned Panama Canal Authority.
