Red Army seized unattended items

The Pergamon Altar, a monumental Hellenistic masterpiece, was displayed within the Pergamon Museum's Antikensammlung until its closure in 2023. Construction of the museum began in 1910 under Emperor Wilhelm II, with plans by Alfred Messel and Ludwig Hoffmann, and was completed in 1930. In 1945, the Red Army seized unattended museum items, many of which remain in Russia, stored in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The museum's North Wing is scheduled to reopen in 2027 after extensive renovation works expected to last until 2043.
