Persepolis, IR

The earliest remains date back to 515 BC

Persepolis, also known as Takht-e Jamshid, served as the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Darius I created this city as the government seat and center for receptions and festivals. The earliest remains date back to 515 BC, and inscriptions on the buildings support the view that Darius built the terrace and first palaces. Grey limestone was the main building material used at Persepolis. In the spring of 330 BC, a fire destroyed the palaces before leaving the city.
