Phlegraean Fields, IT

Located about 9 km east of Naples

The Phlegraean Fields is a large volcanic caldera west of Naples, Italy. It is part of the Campanian volcanic arc, which includes Mount Vesuvius, located about 9 km east of Naples. The resulting ecological crisis is believed to have contributed to the extinction of the last Neanderthal and first Homo sapiens populations of the early Upper Paleolithic, after which modern humans repopulated Europe from the east during the ice age from 38,000 to 36,000 BC.
