Porto-Novo, BJ
Named for a resemblance
In 1730 a Portuguese trader named Eucaristo de Campos called the place Porto-Novo, because it reminded him of somewhere else. It was developed as a port for the transatlantic slave trade. It is now the capital of Benin. The Alexandre Sènou Adandé Ethnographic Museum there holds a large collection of Yoruba masks.
