Twenty-three rivers and streams empty into Qinghai Lake

Qinghai Lake is an alkaline endorheic salt lake. It became isolated from the Yellow River about 150,000 years ago; Twenty-three rivers and streams empty into Qinghai Lake, with five permanent streams providing 80% of the total influx. The Bird Islands have been sanctuaries within the Qinghai Lake Natural Protection Zone since 1997.
