Capturing leader Rumiñahui and ending organized resistance

Quito is the capital and second-largest city of Ecuador, with an estimated population of 1.7 million in the city and 2.8 million in its metropolitan area. The city was officially founded on 6 December 1534 when Sebastián de Benalcázar led 204 settlers to refound it at its present location, capturing leader Rumiñahui and ending organized resistance. The Spanish converted the indigenous population to Christianity and utilized them as labor for construction. In 2010, the Museo de Sitio La Florida opened to preserve artifacts from the tombs and explain the complex culture.
