Raqqa, SY

Approximately 2,660 meters (8,730 feet) long

Raqqa's massive city walls, approximately 2,660 meters (8,730 feet) long, still stand today. The congregational mosque in Raqqa, the first built from scratch on a coherent, integrated plan, significantly influenced later mosque architecture. Al-Mansur, the Abbasid caliph, established al- Rāfiqah, a new garrison city, about 200 meters (660 feet) west of Raqqa to strengthen the empire's fortifications. This strategic project aimed to secure the northwestern frontier with the Byzantine Empire.
