Red Square is one of the oldest and largest squares in Moscow, Russia. Its contemporary name, Krasnaya, first appeared in 1661–62. Italian architects, working on the Kremlin fortifications, persuaded Ivan the Great to clear the area outside the walls to create a shooting field. The moat that once separated the square from the Kremlin was paved over in 1812. Red Square has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
