Rennes stands where the Ille meets the Vilaine, in the east of Brittany. In 1675 the city took a leading part in the Revolt of the papier timbré — a rising over stamped paper. The Jardin botanique du Thabor came nearly two centuries after that, laid out between 1860 and 1867.
