The Historic Center of Salvador

Salvador is the capital city of the Brazilian state of Bahia. In 1549, Portuguese settlers under Tomé de Sousa established the present city as the fortress of São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos. This foundation was part of the implementation of the General Government of Brazil by the Portuguese Empire. The Historic Center of Salvador, located on the outskirts of Pelourinho, features colonial architecture with historical monuments from the 17th to the early 20th centuries and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
