The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture of a robed and crowned woman on Liberty Island, part of New York City, in New York Harbor. French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper-clad statue, and Gustave Eiffel built its metal framework. The statue was proposed to commemorate the upcoming centennial of U. S. independence in 1876. It also honored the perseverance of American democracy and the liberation of the nation's slaves. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886.
