Two miles west of Amesbury

Stonehenge is a prehistoric megalithic structure on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, two miles west of Amesbury. The first monument consisted of a circular bank and ditch enclosure made of Late Cretaceous Seaford chalk. This initial structure measured about 360 feet in diameter with a large entrance to the north east; a smaller entrance existed to the south within that original circular bank and ditch enclosure. Stonehenge evolved in several construction phases spanning at least 1500 years. Evidence of large-scale construction on and around the monument perhaps extends the landscape's time frame to 6500 years. In 2013, a team of archaeologists led by Parker Pearson excavated more than 50,000 cremated bone fragments. These remains came from 63 individuals buried at Stonehenge.
