Ground broken on 11 September
Ground was broken on 11 September 1941. George Bergstrom designed it and John McShain built it, on an accelerated schedule during World War II, and it was dedicated on 15 January 1943 — five sides, five floors. Sixty years to the day after that groundbreaking, five al-Qaeda hijackers flew American Airlines Flight 77 into the western side.
