The Maghsharan Tuareg are credited with founding it

The Maghsharan Tuareg are credited with founding it, and they gave it a Berber name built from two parts: tin, the feminine form of in, meaning place of — and bouctou. The city stands 20 kilometres north of the Niger. People were here long before the founding, though: an Iron Age tell nine kilometres to the southeast was first occupied in the 5th century BC.
