Troy or Ilion stood in present-day Çanakkale, Turkey; Settled around 3600 BC, it grew into a fortified city by 3000 BC, known as Troy I. Archaeologists use Roman numerals to label its strata, from Troy I to Troy IX. Troy VIII and IX were Greek and Roman cities. These final layers became religious and tourist centers due to mythic ties. The site is open to the public and was listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 1998.
