Wake Island, US

Following the withdrawal of Pan American Airways

An airfield and hotel were built on Wake Island in 1935 by Pan American Airways; this establishment turned Wake Island into a stopover for trans-Pacific flying boat routes. Following the withdrawal of Pan American Airways, the United States Air Force took over administration of the island. Subsequently, the atoll served as a processing site for Vietnamese refugees during Operation New Life in 1975.
